Introduction to MBTI
Get a full overview of the fundamentals of MBTI. Learn about the fundamental building blocks that the course will cover: the cognitive functions, the archetypes, the worldviews and the expression styles.

Have you ever peered into another mind and felt as if you were staring into an uncharted galaxy — or gazed at your own reflection and wondered what mechanics turn within?
I am Type17, your guide through this inner cosmos. With MBTI as our star chart, you will learn to navigate motivations, fears, and desires — and gain a map to your own psyche.
This course gives you everything needed for a solid, fundamental understanding of the system — whether you are a complete beginner or already know the basics and wish to go deeper.
What is MBTI?
MBTI is one of the most accurate and deep personality frameworks available. It is empirical in spirit, grounded in the neuroscience of Dr. Dario Nardi — whose work shows how each cognitive function relates to specific brain regions, giving each type its own neurological processing style.
It rests on Carl Jung, founder of analytical psychology, who gave you the collective unconscious, the Archetypes, and the 8 Cognitive Functions — the bedrock of this system. Myers and Briggs later shaped the familiar sixteen-type model. Their four dichotomies are a useful starting point:
| Dichotomy | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E / I | Extraversion / Introversion |
| S / N | Sensing / Intuition |
| T / F | Thinking / Feeling |
| J / P | Judging / Perceiving |
These yield the familiar codes — ENTP, ISFP, and the rest — but they lack the necessary precision. Real depth comes from the 8 Cognitive Functions each type uses:
Te · Ti · Se · Si · Ne · Ni · Fe · Fi
Understanding these is critical: they are the components each type uses to interact with reality. John Beebe’s eight-function model solved a crucial gap by assigning Archetypes to each function — illuminating the shadow and the pathways of development. CS Joseph later expanded this with the four sides of the mind, suggesting we each carry four types within us — the key to fuller integration of the Self.
Our trajectory
First we master the fundamental forces:
- The 8 Cognitive Functions and their Archetypes (Hero, Demon, and the rest)
- The 4 Worldviews — Guardians (SJ), Artisans (SP), Intellectuals (NT), Idealists (NF)
- The 4 Expression Styles — Structure, Starter, Finisher, Background
These elements combine into the Type Grid: a four-by-four matrix that elegantly reveals the sixteen types. It is our primary navigation tool.

Once the basics are solid, we venture deeper — Ego, Shadow, Subconscious, Superego; integration; inter-type dynamics; relationships; the dance of different functions.
Do not be daunted. We proceed one constellation at a time. Focus on grasping the core fundamentals and observing them in your own life. Shortly this will not be merely theory — it will be a language you speak, and a practical tool for daily existence.
